Best 1983 movies

Moviegoers in 1983 had plenty of choices. The original Star Wars trilogy came to a close, Tom Cruise slid across a living room floor in his socks, and two European masters released late-career work (one of them a final film). Some movies ruled the box office that year. Others took decades to find their audience.
Awards season told its own story. Terms of Endearment took home five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and Robert Duvall won Best Actor for Tender Mercies. The Right Stuff earned four Oscars despite struggling to earn back its budget in theaters.
Time has a way of reshuffling a year's hierarchy. A modest holiday comedy became a cable TV tradition. A fable set in a Scottish seaside village earned a devoted following. And a crime epic that critics were split on in its day now has more than a million IMDb ratings.
